Our curriculum
At The Limes, we deliver a robust and engaging Religious Education curriculum that ensures our children gain a deep understanding of diverse faiths and worldviews, fostering respect, tolerance, and curiosity. Our scheme of learning for Key Stage 2 is delivered using the high-quality, comprehensive resources provided by the Oak National Academy.
The Oak National Academy Curriculum
We have adopted the Oak National Academy RE curriculum because it offers a fully sequenced, expertly designed set of lessons that ensures progression of knowledge and skills across all year groups. The Oak Academy is a government-backed initiative known for producing free, high-quality, and reliable teaching resources. This programme allows us to provide a rigorous and balanced curriculum that introduces pupils to a wide range of principal religions and beliefs.
The curriculum is structured into distinct, carefully planned units focusing on major worldviews, including: Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism, and Humanism. This comprehensive coverage ensures children are equipped to understand and articulate their own position within a diverse society. By using Oak's ready-made, professionally created lessons, we ensure consistency and depth of learning, allowing our teachers to spend less time on planning and more time focusing on stimulating meaningful discussions and tailoring lessons to the specific needs and context of our pupils. The scheme is designed to enhance pupils’ cultural literacy and spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development.
Fostering Understanding, Respect, and Community Links
Our primary aim through RE is not simply to teach about religion, but to teach children how to think critically and enquire wisely about religious and non-religious beliefs and practices. We encourage children to ask thoughtful questions, consider different perspectives, and reflect on their own beliefs and values. This approach directly contributes to the British Values of mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, preparing them to thrive in a multi-cultural society.
We strengthen our understanding of Christianity through regular assemblies led by representatives from local churches. These assemblies provide children with an authentic insight into Christian beliefs and practices. Furthermore, children in specific year groups have the valuable opportunity to visit our local church to experience key religious events firsthand, such as services and celebrations during Christmas and Easter. These community links and real-world experiences greatly enrich their RE learning.
